I've been playing with a new medium this week - water soluble oil paints. At the same time, I am working on my skills - not just portraits, but what I am really working on is seeing values and painting shapes. I'm beginning to see things differently.
You tube is a bonanza of painting information. Tons of lessons there for whatever you want to learn in regard to painting and drawing. I love the idea that there are artists in the world that are willing to share what they know.
I'm liking these water soluble oils. They are like butter. Mind you, I haven't painted with regular oils, so I have no comparison. Its totally new to me to be able to blend and mix colors on the paper. It doesn't work that way in wax. My first tendency is to not use enough paint. For some reason that is difficult to use enough paint - why is that? Its not like I don't have enough, yet I don't use enough. I'm also learning that I must be more patient. I tend to not be careful enough with my colors and mix a bit of mud. I came back the second day on this one, which was good for her eye, but not for her nose.. Will share more next week! Happy Friday
Looks wonderful! I love her skin tone and yes, the eye and the lips are perfect! Good work on the hair, too, blond hair is tricky! Thank you for sharing! I would be thankful for some good Youtube links... :)
ReplyDeleteYour work is so amazing Marji! I love her, and hearing about your exploration of a new medium. Experimenting always brings ups and downs, doesn't it? Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteMan oh man, this is art! I couldn't do this at all, and I am in awe of you.Happy PPF.
ReplyDeleteI actually love the marks of the hair where there is less paint and it looks dry-brushed. These marks really complement the finished, polished painted face.
ReplyDeleteYour work is amazing!!

Happy PPF!!

Loving your terrific portrait...........happy painting and Happy PPF, Annette x
ReplyDeleteI'm not doing PPF this week but your blog popped up on my "all blogs" review. I just had to tell you how gorgeous this is. And since I have a starter set of the water soluble oil paints, I am following with much interest you progress with this medium. I still don't know how to use it even though 40 years ago I did only regular oil paints. I haven't caught on and I also find that I am not using enough paint. Could it be that more is required with this than with normal oils?
ReplyDeleteExcellent portrait with your new medium ~ Wonderful!

ReplyDeleteIt is great you enjoy oils. You are also very right that patience is very important. I found with myself that not only skills need to be pracitced, patience needs to be practiced as well, which is not always so that easy. Great painting Marji. Have a very creative week.
