Encaustic Painting and Art, Beating the Saboteur, and Sparrow Song

Sparrow Song
encaustic on birch 6x6
There's so much going on it makes my head spin.  Yet, I know there is peace found in art and dropping into the zone of creativity.  The problem is carving out the time in between all the other things that make up the wonderful froth of life.

The "do" list is long, yet slowly the items are scratched off even though there is no end to that list.   Today my day was eaten up entirely with errands and flat tires, and returns, drop offs and pick ups - the bank, the grocery store, the dry cleaners - its endless. I decided to write off today as a "get it done" day so tomorrow is  mine or at least partially mine.  Sometimes I find it hard to get past the "do" list and on to my own time - yet there is that nagging voice inside that says - get it done so tomorrow is free.  Yet, tomorrow never seems to be free.  Its that nasty self saboteur at work again. That is the part of us that keeps us from spending our time as we really need to be doing rather than what we probably should be doing. There is always the "do" list of life, it will always be so.  Excuses, excuses - is there really anything that is so important to keep us from pursuing our creative outlet - the thing that keeps us balanced and at our best?  Yes, in some cases - but for the most part... NO, these things are just distractions that can be managed in a way that allows us our own time also.  Its time to tell Father Time to take a break and the Saboteur to take a hike and let's get on with what we really need "to do" - our art, our dreams, our purpose.  Carve time, make time and make your art.
Happy Friday everyone!

I'm sharing studio happenings and inspirations on Tuesdays - if you missed this week, you can see it here.

  1. True that..!! I live by the oxymoron" Boundaries set us free!"Knowing we often have to say "no" to make "us" time. Also I found scheduling your art time just like you do any other appointment. At least you show up to do art, whether it comes forth is a whole other problem!! There will always be something needs doing. Do like the movie and " Let it go!" It will always be there later. I know easier said than done...or requisition some helpers!! Gorgeous bird he seems to have something to say too!!

  9. I know about finding time and that ever growing list of interferences. I've been feeling like art time is low on my list when it should be the top of my list, since I agree, art is life's saving grace. I love your bird. More beautiful art. Have a great hopefully full of art weekend.

  13. Hi Marji. Your piece is so real. Great texture on the sparrow. Looks like it is hungry. I do "to do" lists because it helps me stay organized. I check off as it's done. It's being hectic lately and time to go take my Mom grocery shopping back in San Jose. Duties that must be done. :) You know....I'm just glad that tomorrow does come and am pretty thankful for that.:)

  15. Hello Marji. I found your blog after your visit, thank you for dropping by. I live in Turkey and here it is so hard to find art courses or workshops for people who are not receiving a fine art education. Encaustic is a term i have only come across on the internet recently but i am enjoying it so much. I know i feel like i am discovering the world again:) These works have such a depth. I wish i could see them in person, or take a class. Thank you for sharing this beautiful work.

  17. I so love ;your encaustic work - It gives the paintings such a wonderful softness. When I read your post I remembered something that is often said - but that doesn't make it less true. No one has ever had a headstone chiseled with the words "I wish I had done more errands!" Enjoy some time for yourself. Art feeds the soul.
